It started off innocently enough. My niece, Andrea, and I were doing the dishes on Christmas evening when she happened to mention seeing something on Pinterest.

“Are you on it?” she asked.

I had heard the word mentioned before but was unfamiliar with the latest craze in online addiction and doubly unaware of how quickly an activity as innocent as attaching pictures to a virtual bulletin board could consume the unsuspecting soul.

“No,” I replied. “What is it?”

Andrea described the basics but ended her brief educational moment with “……if you were on it, I would DEFINITELY follow you.” Cue up the music….”I will follow youuuuu…. follow you wherever youuuu may gooooo.”

Who wouldn’t want to be followed????

Two months later…. “my name is Julie and I’m a Pinterest addict.”

Do not bother to reach me between the hours of 10 pm and midnight because I’m busy pinning. Your house could be on fire but before I’d respond, I would check to see if there are any cool tips posted on how to put out said fire.

I know how to create a bird feeder out of a slinky.

I know 1001 uses for vinegar and now possess over 200 soup recipes!

I know how to turn a discarded tire found by the side of the road into an artfully displayed hanging basket.

I know the tastes and habits of total strangers whom I’m convinced are my long lost soul sisters because we like the exact same things!

The problem is….. I probably won’t have time to really do much of it because I can’t tear myself away from the computer.

They say the first step in dealing with an addiction is realizing that you have a problem.

Houston….. we have a problem.

I don’t mean to end this post abruptly but it’s almost 10:00 and it’s pinning time!

Julie

Apparently child sensations Sophia Grace & Rosie received my invitation, but I guess the fact that they are frequent guests on the Ellen show secured their celebrity status.

So, once again, I will watch the Grammys ala Gaver-style. It’s actually a pretty good deal. I didn’t have to starve myself in order to get into my outfit. No one will be asking me who I’m wearing (but if you’re interested, it’s Macy’s Fleecewear couture). And I’ll have a front row seat, complete with popcorn and all the other snack accessories to get through the evening.

However, tonight’s show will be bittersweet because of yesterday’s announcement that Whitney Houston has died. For some reason this news really saddened me and I’m not the kind of person who normally feels affected by a celebrity death. But she had an immense talent that we were blessed to have been the benefactor of. Sadly, however, it came at a big price to her soul, health, and ultimately her life. Ohhhhh to have had that kind of talent.

Ohhhh… to even be able to carry a tune. That would make me happy.

When my son Craig was a newborn, I used to rock him to sleep every night before placing him in the crib. During our rocking chair time I sang and sang and sang, partly to prolong having to put him down. Mostly because I always loved music and hoped that he would grow up loving music too. (He did!)

One evening in the middle of what I always felt was such a tender Mother-son time, my husband poked his head in the door and said “I wonder how old Craig will be when he realizes you can’t carry a tune.”

But tonight, it doesn’t matter whether my pitch is off or even if I forget the words. It’s Grammy night and we celebrate those who did receive that gift. And when Jennifer Hudson sings her tribute to one of the greatest voices that ended too soon, I, too will sing along. Loudly.

“I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and help them lead the way.”

Far be it for me to complain about it EVER being too warm but what’s the big deal about January????? This weekend’s flirtation with the 60′s makes me realize that my whining about hating winter must have worked. Somebody heard me and decided to show mercy. But here’s the deal.

I miss it.

It’s like the boyfriend you break up with because you don’t want him, but don’t want anyone else to have him either. Winter….I want you back! I want it to look and feel a LITTLE bit like the transition between fall and spring…not a 15-feet-of-snow-kind of winter but at least one where wearing my tights and cool new leather boots I bought this season don’t leave me sweating!

One of the (few) good things I’ve often commented about winter is that it allows me to enjoy a much needed rest before hitting the yard hard during early spring garden season. But today when I walked to the car I noticed that my spring bulbs are peeking out of the ground a good three inches. I’m worried I’m going to be out there weeding on Groundhog’s Day!

So it must be true.. Mother Nature IS a woman and she can’t make up her mind!

I created a entire Pinterest board of beautiful winter images to get me through the season. I’m ready….mentally, emotionally, physically. I have hot chocolate to make with a cute peppermint rim around the mug. New books have arrived from Amazon to make snowy days fun reading days. I have craft projects to make, and cozy, fleece pjs to snuggle in.

So….. BRING IT!

And don’t even THINK about coming in March! Because, by then, the shipments from my seed catalog shopping will have arrived and I’ll be out of the mood for you.

So for now… how about a little frosting?

My high school didn’t have a football program until my senior year. In spite of the fact that I was raised on soccer, I became an instant fan of the sport because I was dating the new quarterback at the time. The boyfriend situation ended about the same time football season was over so my motivation to understand the difference between a tight end and a running back was quite temporary.

At the small state university I attended, I was a member of the drill team. We performed along with the marching band during the home football halftime shows. To my recollection, our team won only one game during my four year tenure, which is the excuse I’m using for why I didn’t take the time to understand the sport my second time around.

My husband always loved football. Being the good wife that I am, I realized that he would enjoy watching the games at our home much more if he had a companion. So, for many years I invited my friend, Nancy, to watch the Superbowl at our house. While they screamed and cheered for their respective teams, I ironed upstairs. I wish I could say that I’m making this up but unfortunately, I’m not. Yeah… just call me the Touchdown girl because it’s the only time I would run downstairs to be part of the excitement.

When my sons entered high school, we attended many of the high school games. I could tell you what everyone in the stands wore, recite the concession stand menu, hum all the tunes in the halftime performance, and ponder the answer to “who let the dogs out?” for weeks because apparently no one in the stands knew! But I STILL had a difficult time staying focused on the game.

I guess I just don’t get it.

And sadly, I’m come to realize that I don’t care if I do.

For the next two weeks, the Superbowl will be the topic of conversation everywhere you go.

I will listen and try to act interested.

I will plan and display an impressive array of tailgate-style treats on game day.

I will sit on the sofa and laugh at the commercials and watch the halftime show…. and ponder…..

Who really DID leave the dogs out and why does no one care anymore?

Here’s wishing your team wins!

As someone who has been married for 32 years, I guess I can understand why the month of January could potentially be the straw that breaks the matrimonial camel’s back.

1) Primping for the holidays is officially over and the 3 month hiatus from shaving begins! (Ok… it’s not that bad but I can’t be the only one who enjoys the break!)

2) The post-holiday VISA bill arrives.

3) Watching hours upon hours of football is not exactly most women’s idea of foreplay.

4) Beginning a strict regimen of carb-less eating can make even the happiest of couples a tad bitchy.

5) Being snowed in with one’s spouse with no electricity can be a blessing or a curse…. which means only one thing…….

September mostly likely tops the charts as the highest birth rate month.

Check it out and get back to me, will ya?

I’m going to shave my legs!

The reality is I cringe when I hear the term “motivational speaker.”

There is one thing I’ve learned in all my years. You cannot motivate another person.

You can inspire them, educate them, enlighten them, even scare them.

But you cannot motivate them!

Because motivation comes from within and the only person who can truly turn it on is the one who owns it.

And that’s why I cringe when I hear those words.

This past year I was motivated to complete many things that were important to me. I finished my Masters, published my second book, completed my term as Board President of a local nonprofit, and kept my business alive and thriving during a fledging economy. I feel a great sense of pride about managing all of that without ending up in a straight jacket.

But the one area I was not motivated to change was my health & fitness. You may recall from earlier posts that in the late fall I began training with Rick at In-FIT Studio. www.infitstudio.com. Owner Kip Jawish and my personal trainer Rick Davis are great examples of the power of a healthy lifestyle. They are knowledgeable, encouraging, and passionate about health.

But I wasn’t. To be truthful, my behavior was not unlike some of the clients I serve…..going through the motions but not fully committed. That strong desire to change had not fully set in.

Things are different now because the student is ready! Fortunately I chose the right experts to inspire and teach me on the journey.

What is it with you? What needs changing in YOUR life? No one can do it for you.

Only YOU can!

Grab the remote and let’s get busy!

Julie

“I wish that life should not be cheap, but sacred…the days to be as centuries, loaded, fragrant.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

Happy New Year! I hope this post finds you all still reveling in the excitement and optimism that comes with starting anew.

As I reflect on the coming year, my thoughts center not on accomplishments and achievements as in years past, rather on a quiet resolve to celebrate the sacred in every day.

My list this year may seem silly or trivial to some, but my goal is to make 2012 a year that is “loaded, fragrant,” and filled with extraordinary pleasure found in ordinary things. This year I will…..

1) Nap, unapologetically!

2) Drink my tea from a floral china cup instead of the chipped mug from the cupboard.

3) Linger over lunch with a friend instead of rushing off to the next tightly scheduled appointment.

4) Buy myself flowers and not feel guilty about their limited shelf life.

5) Read books that inspire me to think, feel, or act differently.

6) Eat slowly so I actually taste and appreciate the food I’m eating.

7). Speak less and listen more.

8). Leave no antique or book store undiscovered.

9) Snap more pictures, play my piano, have more parties.

10) Mosey.

Wishing you a new year bright with promise and filled with sacred moments!

Julie

A Christmas tree was finally procured so the Gaver household does, in fact, have a beautiful, petite blue spruce to call their own.

The stockings have been hung. The cookies are under construction. All signs indicate that I am ready for Christmas.

But all is not complete.

My babies are not yet here.

I know… my sons are 28 and 25 and have both been living on their own in the city for several years but at Christmastime, they will always be my babies. They will arrive on Christmas eve.

In spite of the fact that the “busyness” of the holidays is almost complete, my favorite part of Christmas awaits.

At 9:55 pm in the sanctuary of the Middletown United Methodist Church, pastors Susan and Chris will turn to light their candles from the Christ candle predominantly displayed in the middle of the alter. They will begin the chain reaction until all of our candles are glowing bright. As the sanctuary lights dim and the congregation begins to sing “Silent Night” I am once again reminded of the reason for this season.

As I peek at my sons and husband singing my favorite Christmas song and glance around the room at the illuminated faces of my church family, I savor this most beautiful moment of the holidays.

It has not been an easy year but it has been a blessed one. And I praise God for the greatest gift of all. HIS son.

May every moment of the coming year be a “Silent Night” moment for you.

Peace,

Julie

In previous years, I decorated three trees, each sporting a different “theme” that matched the decor in the room it adorned. Under the tree were matching presents for that particular tree. The list of tasks was immense and although what I do still may seem like a lot to some, great strides have been made in reducing the “busyness” of the holiday season.

This year I seem to be taking it to the extreme.

In the opposite direction.

At the time of this writing, it is only 6 days until Christmas.

I have NO tree.
Zip!
Nada. No “Oh Tannenbaum.” No “rocking around the Christmas tree.” No putting an angel on the Gaver tree because there IS none!

Normally this would be freaking me out and I have been making quite a joke out of it. But truth be told, I’m really not upset. If I were, we’d have the tree! Cause that’s the way I roll. The rest of my house is decorated but I’ve been so busy shipping books since the “Must Love Shoes-2″ book launch that I haven’t placed a high priority on securing a Christmas tree.

I attempted to get a tree today but I made the mistake of not going to my cousins’ (who own Gaver Tree Farm in New Market, MD). I thought I was too busy today and didn’t think I could afford the time it took to get there. So I went to a local farm located about 15 minutes from my home. And they were CLOSED!

Serves me right for dissin’ my family. I’m sure the Gaver’s were open.

So I’m going to attempt again tomorrow and maybe….just maybe we’ll have a tree.

And if not, it will be someone’s else’s responsbility. Maybe I’ll make this a little test to see who in my family wants one the most. “Let he who wants the tree, go cut it DOWN!”

And if that doesn’t work….well….. there are two more options: a) the neighbors have a cute little tree on their front porch, just sayin’. b) there are some pretty sorry little Charlie Brown trees in my yard. And we all know how THAT turned out!

Stay tuned!

Julie

ps – I was totally kidding about the neighbor’s tree, for the record.

I just made a post on my Facebook page that obviously hit a nerve with many of my FB friends. Let me explain….

I am a solopreneur.
I work alone.
My office is in my home.
I like it that way.

I get plenty of social time when I’m out speaking and training with audiences of all kinds. In addition, I’m on several boards and active in my community so don’t start singing “Hey there lonely girl” and feeling sorry for me. But during the holiday season there is a very small part of me that wishes I worked in an office.

With lots of people.

Because I miss the company holiday party.

I don’t care what kind either. It could be the “get all gussied up-bribe your husband into going-eat the standard chicken cordon bleu dinner- and watch your uncoordinated boss start the electric slide on the dance floor” kind of holiday party.

It could be the “everyone bring a covered dish for lunch” kind of party where you spend the hour following the eat-fest playing Chinese gift exchange, knowing full well you are going to get stuck with a crappy gift MUCH cheaper than what you brought.

I don’t care. I miss company holiday parties.

I miss the camaraderie of being with people I have spent the entire year with and having an opportunity to say “Wow! We made it through another year together.”

I miss the food. The laughter. And yes, I even miss seeing men in their cheesy holiday neckties and women in their tacky holiday sweaters.

Call me old fashioned but that’s what working during the holidays is all about.

So from the comfort of my home office I wish you “happy holidays.” We made it through another year together and I thank you for the part you played in allowing me to continue making my passion my profession.

May your company holiday party be a blast! May your new year be bright with hope and promise. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Now, pass me some punch!

Julie
