The truth about motivation

Comments   |   Inspiration

People have called me a motivational speaker since I started my training & consulting practice over 14 years ago. The reality is I cringe when I hear the term “motivational speaker.”

There is one thing I’ve learned in all my years. You cannot motivate another person.

You can inspire them, educate them, enlighten them, even scare them.

But you cannot motivate them!

Because motivation comes from within and the only person who can truly turn it on is the one who owns it.

And that’s why I cringe when I hear those words.

This past year I was motivated to complete many things that were important to me. I finished my Masters, published my second book, completed my term as Board President of a local nonprofit, and kept my business alive and thriving during a fledging economy. I feel a great sense of pride about managing all of that without ending up in a straight jacket.

But the one area I was not motivated to change was my health & fitness. You may recall from earlier posts that in the late fall I began training with Rick at In-FIT Studio. www.infitstudio.com. Owner Kip Jawish and my personal trainer Rick Davis are great examples of the power of a healthy lifestyle. They are knowledgeable, encouraging, and passionate about health.

But I wasn’t. To be truthful, my behavior was not unlike some of the clients I serve…..going through the motions but not fully committed. That strong desire to change had not fully set in.

Things are different now because the student is ready! Fortunately I chose the right experts to inspire and teach me on the journey.

What is it with you? What needs changing in YOUR life? No one can do it for you.

Only YOU can!

Grab the remote and let’s get busy!
